Durban - The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) would investigate an attack on a family in Greytown that left one person dead, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Saturday.

Around 3am on Thursday, four people purporting to be police members arrived at the home of the Shezi family and took five family members away, Captain Thulani Zwane said.

“The victims claim that they were taken to nearby bushes where they were allegedly assaulted,” he said.

“The suspects accused them of being involved in a murder case that was reported...earlier this month.”

One of the family members later died from his injuries.

“A case of murder, kidnapping and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm was opened at Ematimatolo police station and the matter was reported to IPID for further investigation.”

Provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni condemned the attack and said police would co-operate with the IPID investigation.

“An internal investigation will also be conducted and any police officer that may be identified as being part of this group will be dealt with harshly,” she said. - Sapa
